Kuranda ~ Palm Cove ~ Mossman Gorge ~ The Daintree ~ Cape Tribulation ~ The Low Isles ~ Port Douglas

Welcome to your tropical getaway! Port Douglas is equal parts rejuvenating and relaxing, from walks along dreamy Four Mile Beach to snorkelling off the low Isles, to fresh seafood dining at the marina to visiting Kurandas famous markets, we’ve got you covered with this girls only glorious getaway.

The peninsula of Port Douglas was the traditional home of the Yirrganydji people until European settlement turned it into a remote port and fishing village. Port Douglas really developed in the 1980s, thanks largely to the late entrepreneur Christopher Skase, becoming a sophisticated and upmarket resort town that’s quite a contrast to Cairns’ tourist scene. Port Douglas is well connected: the Low Isles is 1.5 hours offshore, the Mossman Gorge is just 30 minutes away and its an hour from Cairns airport which has one of the most scenic drives in the world!

A growing number of flashpackers, cashed-up couples and fiscally flush families choose Port Douglas over Cairns as their Far North base, and for good reason. We will have the opportunity to soak in the beauty of this little town as we are staying right in the centre of it all, just a few minutes walk to the main street. Time is set aside for you to wander the shops, book a massage or enjoy a yoga class. This is ultimate tropical escape.

The Weather

Glorious warm, sunny days give way to comfortable evenings but it’s still considerably warmer than the cooling climes of down south. The weather is gorgeous in May.

Expect a Celsius-range of between 20 degrees in the evening to 27, or higher, during the day. Some days can reach the early 30s.

The Daintree has had a good soaking too, so a visit to the oldest continuously living rainforest is a must-do. And the waterfalls, creeks and swimming holes are flowing with pristine, cool waters after the plentiful rainfall of the ‘green season’, or the ‘big wet’, as it’s known to the locals.

Beach Please!

Yes, the iconic Four Mile Beach is there all year-round and yes, it pretty much always looks stunning but May is when you’ll have it all to yourself.

In April the stingers shove off so you can enjoy the beach without the aid of a protective suit.

The waters are still warm with hardly any waves, so it’s perfect for floating around. The Surf Life Saving Club monitors a netted area at the south end where you can hire surf skis, stand-up paddle boards, sun lounges and umbrellas. So with a slip, slop, slap you can settle in for a day at the beach.

If you’re an early bird, walk the shores at sunrise – you may even spot a pod of dolphins in the distance.

Surrounded by nature’s riches of two iconic World Heritage areas, the majestic Great Barrier Reef and the ancient Daintree Rainforest, Port Douglas is approximately 70km north of Cairns, Tropical North Queensland. Founded in 1877, Port Douglas came into being as a port where riches from the goldfields of the Hodgkinson and Palmer Rivers were trafficked by bullock drays to be loaded onto vessels for southern cities.

Today Port Douglas welcomes visitors from all over the world to experience the riches of this international holiday mecca which until as recently as the 1960s was a sleepy fishing village.

Port, as affectionately known by locals, is enjoyed by everyone. Families, couples, singles and celebrities are all inspired by the laid back lifestyle, superb natural attractions and effortless sophistication which blend together to create the unique flavour of Port Douglas.

Whether it’s the enchantment of experiencing the magical world of the Great Barrier Reef through snorkelling, or in a glass bottomed boat at the spectacular Low Isles, or seeing the timeless rainforest by hiking, 4WD safari or though the eyes of a local guide, nature’s charms here delight everyone.

When you’re ready to rest and restore, discover the luxurious spas the region offers. When you’re ready to play, experience the famous Four Mile Beach, or step out under starry evenings to world class restaurants, funky bars and stylish cafes.

Port Douglas is Australia’s tropical jewel; a paradise which once discovered is never forgotten.

Please note that on this tour there is some walking and also one day of snorkelling.
